Topaz has a relatively low index of refraction, so while it may show more sparkles than a cut quartz, topaz with large facets will not sparkle as readily as other gemstones. Cut topaz may show a dull-like table facet. In a natural state, topaz is sometimes confused with citrine because of its golden brown to yellow color, however, the varieties of topaz include wine red, pale gray, reddish-orange, pale green, or pink. Orange topaz is the birthstone for November and is called precious topaz. While topaz can be synthesized, its abundance makes natural varieties readily available. During the Middle Ages, topaz was thought to cure lunacy; however, the word generally referred to a yellow gemstone. Since the 1930s, topaz only refers to either the aluminum or chromium silicates.
