Crystal skulls refer to carving made from “rock crystal”. The variety of crystal skulls made of crystal other than milky quartz evinces a new meaning for the term. During the 19th century, crystal skulls were made at Ider-Oberstein, Germany from Brazilian quartz, hence, clear quartz is also called “rock crystal”. The claims of paranormal origins as Mesoamerican artifacts has been refuted by science. For collectors of crystal figurines, the skull may be the most popular due to the claims made by New Age spiritualists. No references are made regarding this crystal figurine in the mythologies of pre-Colombian peoples. The crystal skulls obtained by museums in 1967 have jewelers’ marks between the teeth and are not from documented excavations. The skulls obtained by the Paris and British museums were obtained from Eugene Boban who operated at Mexico City. The British museum had bought theirs through Tiffany & Co. When a crystal skull was donated to the Smithsonian by an anonymous source, it concluded the skull had the same origins in the 19th century like the other two. Yet, the skull in the Smithsonian collection of 1992 proceeds the other two of 1897. A 2008 study of the skull at the Smithsonian found abrasive marks made by a 1890’s compound, carborundum.
